Dear Mr Friedl,

Please excuse my writing in English but unfortunately my German is not yet good enough to communicate what I wanted to say. I hope you are able to read this.
I recently took early retirement and moved to Vienna with my wife after more than 30 years of working and living in various parts of the world. So I was very pleased to find that Vienna offered so many cultural and multi-cultural opportunities, including the Akkordeon Festival.

I was only able to attend a couple of concerts (but still have one to go to on Sunday) but I just wanted to say a big thank you to you and all the organizers for this marvellous opportunity to hear so much interesting music.
In the two shows I was able to attend, I was able to connect personally with the music in a very emotional way. Being myself British but of Polish/Ukrainian descent and having lived and worked in Latin America for many years, when Maciej Golebiowski sang the tango Jusz Nigdy in Polish at the Akzent, I was almost moved to tears. Similarly, Rupa last Sunday, echoing India, where I also lived and worked for many years, and singing in Spanish, was a fantastic musical as well as emotional event. I realised that being able to hear music like this in Vienna just reinforced our belief that coming to live here was the right decision.

I must confess that although I played or rather tried to play the accordion for a few years as a child in England - a very "nerdy" and strange thing to be doing in the sixties! but I was a "polak" after all! - it was only slowly over the last few years that I have become a real fan of the instrument now that it is being played so much in so many different ways and in so many places (though I must also confess I am not a fan of the more schmaltzy variety of accordion music). My own personal favourite of recent years was Kepa Junkera whom I saw in New York a few years ago. I've also just discovered Chango Spasiuk, again a Latin/Slavic mix that I can very much relate to, from a part of the world that I know.
When Rupa played the Colombian tune Soledad I started to wonder if the Festival has ever contemplated looking beyond Europe for musicians, especially to Latin America which has such a fantastic array of musical styles that use the accordion. Although much of it is dance music, there's nothing wrong with that! I spent the last few years of my career with the UN working in the Dominican Republic where the accordion is more or less the national instrument. But I'm sure you know that almost in every country south of the Rio Grande the accordion is ubiquitous. I suppose that the cost of bringing over people from Latin America makes it prohibitive - but one could explore support from Embassies here.
Having said that, if there is any way in which you might be able to use the help of a multi-lingual (hopefully by this time next year German will be included!) music fan in the future, let me know. What, by the way, do all the accordion fans and organizers do in between Festivals??
Again, many thanks for a great Festival.
With best regards.
